History and Origins

Place de la Concorde, located between the Champs-Élysées and the Jardin des Tuileries, is one of the most famous squares in Paris. Designed by architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel in 1755, it was initially named Place Louis XV to honor the king of the time. During the French Revolution, it was renamed Place de la Révolution and became infamous for the guillotine erected there, where Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, among many others, were executed.

The Obelisk of Luxor

In the center of the square stands the imposing obelisk of Luxor, offered by Egypt in 1831. This obelisk, more than 3,000 years old, is covered with hieroglyphs celebrating the reign of Pharaoh Ramses II. It was erected in Paris in 1836 and is today one of the city's most photographed monuments. At its feet, bronze plaques illustrate the techniques used for its transport from Egypt.

The Majestic Fountains

On either side of the obelisk are two superb fountains designed by Jacques Ignace Hittorff: the Fontaine des Mers and the Fontaine des Fleuves. Inspired by Roman fountains, they symbolize rivers and seas, with allegorical statues representing the riches and activities of French waters. Their elegance and symmetry add a touch of grandeur to the place.

Statues and Decorations

Around the square, eight statues represent the major cities of France, such as Bordeaux, Brest, Lille, and Strasbourg. Each statue, created by different renowned artists, is placed on a richly decorated pedestal, adding architectural harmony to the whole. These statues symbolize the diversity and wealth of the country.

A Place for Meetings and Celebrations

Today, Place de la Concorde is much more than just a historic site. It is a gathering place for Parisians and tourists, hosting events such as parades, national celebrations, and demonstrations. Its strategic location also makes it an ideal starting point for exploring other major Parisian attractions, such as the Louvre, the Champs-Élysées, and the Musée de l'Orangerie.
